*Reflection
The meeting that I had with Corinne on Modules 2 & 3 were about the upper body workout and what muscles were the antagonist, synergist, and agonist of each exercise. We also discussed exercise order, substituting exercises, and the lower body workouts of the lower body.
When I worked out Corinne, I felt like I did really well! I believe that I set up the machines in a timely order, I knew what to look for if correction was needed, I was motivating ,and I was confident in what I was doing.

Read Module 1
2:30 p.m. - Meeting with Dwayne and Christina
4:00 p.m. - Departure
*Reflection
The meeting with Dwayne and Christina (a trainer in training, and from Lock Haven!) was an open discussion about the workouts, pre-exhaust, and explanation of exercise order. This was a very productive meeting and it especially helped me with getting know the workout circuits better because it was more interactive than just reading the modules. I was able to get “quizzed” on what single joint and compound muscles were working in each exercise and what was the benefitting and limiting factors.
When working with the teen athletes, I was partnered up with Christina who has a pretty strong background with strength and conditioning. We demonstrated to the teens how to correctly execute their exercises. This lasted for about an hour.
In the second meeting with Dwayne and Christina, we went over Module 1 and summarized what we had read and if the first module needed any additional information or if some of the information needed to be taken out. Our homework was to come up with ten questions that were to test the trainers in training about Module 1.

Day 35 Jul. 29, 2009
8:00 a.m. - Arrival
Answered phone calls and wiped down machines
Placed towels in the wash
Shadowed trainers and took notes
Studied modules
11:00 p.m. - Work with Chris on equipment protocol
12:00 p.m. - Lunch Break
2:00 p.m. - Protocol Meeting
3:30 p.m. - Workout circuit with Corinne
4:00 p.m. - Departure
*Reflection
Each day I work with equipment protocol, I take notes and add them to my synopsis of equipment protocol. This makes it easier for me to study them and get my own perspective on how to utilize the machines.
In the protocol meeting we discussed five articles and how they relate to strength training. They were the Benefits and Limitations of the pilates, yoga, strength training, cardiovascular, and stretching. This meeting was very interactive and got a lot of the staff to think about the benefits and limitations of each topic on a deeper level. The meeting was very informative and I believe everyone took a lot out of it.
With my workout circuit with Corinne, I felt that my form on each machine is progressing and that she rarely has to critique my workout. I also noticed that as I'm doing each exercise, I am painting a picture in my head as to what to say and do on each exercise as if I was a trainer.

*Reflection
In the meeting with Dwayne and Dan, we discussed my future here with Vertex Fitness. For the next two weeks I would have to instill all the information from the modules and the notes that I have been taking from shadowing, as well as working with Chris with equipment protocol in order to start working out clients and being comfortable and knowledgeable with the workouts as too.

Day 33 Jul. 27, 2009
8:00 a.m. - Arrival
Answered phone calls and wiped down machines
Put towels in wash
Entered in new clients names into the new client spreadsheet
11:00 - Lunch Break
12:00 p.m. - Worked with Chris on equipment protocol
Called new potential clients that were scheduled in the workout log to confirm their appointment.
3:00 p.m. - Workout circuit with Robin
4:00 p.m. - Departure
*Reflection
When working with Chris on the equipment protocol, he basically was teaching and testing me to see how well I can execute each exercise. I had many questions about each machine, and if he were to evaluate me on how well I knew the protocol, I think he would give me a 7/10. If I keep on working with him and continuing to spend time learning the exercises, I'll be able to start working with clients within two weeks!
The workout circuit I had with Robin was also a learning experience because she is also learning how to be a trainer, and with some of the exercises, I was helping her execute a few exercises.

Week 7 Summary Jul. 25, 2009
Although there were only two days that I worked at Vertex Fitness this week, I was still able to learn and grasp concepts by reading modules and shadowing as well as get to experience an event that was filled with an array of services and products that were the best of the main line. Going to the event made me aware that I really am learning about Vertex and what it has to offer. When I am asking potential clients to sign up for three free sessions, I am able to tell them about what Vertex is all about and what we can provide for them. This experience has taught me how to be an enticer - knowing how and what to say to clients even if they seem like personal training is not for them.

Day 32 Jul. 24, 2009
8:00 a.m. - Arrival
Answered phone calls and wiped down machines
Folded towels and stored them away
Studied modules
12:00 p.m. - Lunch Break
Called new potential clients that were scheduled in the workout log to confirm their appointment.
Entered the contestants' names, addresses, phone, and e-mail into the database from the Best of the Main Line Party
2:00 p.m. - Workout circuit with Chris
Wiped down machines
4:00 p.m. - Departure
*Reflection
Entering the potential clients into the database was pretty time consuming because there were about a hundred people that I had to enter. Some got a little frustrating because the handwriting was ineligible and I didn't want to “butcher” their names or put the wrong addresses. For some of them, I had to look it up online or find the zip codes for some areas which took even more time.
When I did my workout circuit with Chris, my legs seemed fatigued. I think it was because I have not done a workout circuit within a week since I was either sick or on vacation. However, my upper body strength seemed to be progressing better than before since I am one whole new workout regime.

Day 31 Jul. 23, 2009
9:00 a.m. - Arrival
Answered phone calls and wiped down machines
Added new clients into the spreadsheet
12:00 p.m. - Lunch Break
Called new potential clients that were scheduled in the workout log to confirm their appointment.
Studied Modules
Shadowed Corinne with clients
4:00 p.m. - Depart for Best of Main Line Party
9:00 p.m. - Completion of the day
*Reflection
I chose to study the modules today because in the future, I plan on setting up a client and eventually becoming a part-time trainer to help with the business. Now that I am reading the modules, I have a better understanding because of my knowledge of the machine and also because I workout with them.
The Best of the Main Line Party is an event featuring people, places, restaurants, and services that have received the Best of the Main Line Award. The winners use this event to showcase why they are worthy of their title and be able to network by meeting new people or catching up with old ones.
I feel as though the Party was a great success. Dwayne, Corinne, and I were all who attended. We were there for four hours, and by the end of the night, we have received one hundred eleven leads. The place was packed with curious people wanting to sample the vast array of delicious food and enjoyable products that the Best of the Main Line winners had to offer.

Week 6 Summary Jul. 18, 2009
Although there were two days that I was not able to attend
Vertex Fitness due to a sudden fever, I was able to accomplish many tasks
throughout the week. I was able to
go through CPR and AED training, shadow numerous trainers, read articles, and edit
modules. While shadowing the
trainers, I felt as though I was going through the steps in my head before the
trainers. I even was able to point
out a flaw that a trainer had failed to execute properly. Also, editing the modules helps a lot
with understanding the equipment protocol and knowing what principles new
trainer’s need to know to work at Vertex Fitness.

Day 30 Jul. 17, 2009
8:00 a.m. – Arrival
Read Article
Answered phone calls and wiped down machines
Shadowed Chris and Corinne with their clients
2:00 p.m. – Departure
*Reflection
The article that I read which is probably going to be
discussed in the next protocol meeting
is “The Evolution of HIT: How High-intensity Training Evolved and How
it Revolutionized Bodybuilding
Over the Past Four Decades.” This article opened my eyes to what I didn’t
already know about body building
While shadowing, the notes that I took today on the
Abdominal machine were: Abdominal:
Leg behind pads, lay the head back. Slide all the way back. Rest elbows on pads,
hands on handles so upper body can be locked into position. Trainer pulls
machine forward. Let machine follow and have resistance. Tell client to be as specific as
they can, chest and ribs down into the lap. On the way backward, they should get a good stretch in
abs. Going forward, think of abs
pulling chest straight down into the lap.
Keep neck muscles relaxed and shoulders down. Ease forward and when ease
back, transition should be eased into before the weight rests. Sink into it.
Its ok if machine doesn’t keep moving. (pulling head forward is natural
instinct to do, but be sure to rest head back). Client should have continuous airflow while breathing.
